Skin Care Tips

Your skin is the largest organ of your body and it has the ability to repair and regenerate itself. The skin is made up of seven layers and when we are young we shed the top layer regularly. Shedding the top layer reveals the new skin underneath.
Shedding the top layer of skin triggers the body’s natural production of collagen, the magic ingredient that plumps skin and produces a youthful, dewy glow. As we grow older the skin does not shed its layers so readily and the body produces less collagen.
Older looking skin that has lost its glow is clogged with dead skin particles that block the pores, not only does this slow down the renewal and regeneration of fresh new layers it also makes it impossible for the skin to absorb moisture. No amount of moisturizing is going to change this.
Exfoliation is an effective way of scrubbing away dead skin cells and it is the secret for younger, fresher looking skin. In the process of making new skin cells the body is signalled to produce more collagen. This is vital because loss of collagen is the single main reason why skin ages and becomes wrinkled.
Exfoliating also opens up the skin pores that have become blocked and this will give you smaller skin pores, which in turn will give the appearance of a more refined and even skin tone. Exfoliation increases the blood circulation to your face, something that is absolutely essential in helping to prevent skin aging.
When you remove the surface debris and open up the skin pores by exfoliating, your skin will be able to absorb more nutrients and moisture. Your skin will then appear clearer and softer, fine lines will actually fade.
To help keep your skin looking and feeling radiant, youthful and healthy you need to have a good daily skin care routine. This shouldn’t take more than ten minutes and won’t break the bank.
Firstly you need to identify your skin type and then choose appropriate products. Use the list below to help you.
-
Normal – Your skin feels velvety to touch, has small pores and no acne.
-
Oily – Your skin has enlarged pores with shiny patches. Breakouts may occur frequently.
-
Dry – Your skin has dry and itchy patches and has very small or invisible pores.
-
Combination – Your skin is oily across the forehead, nose and chin, and dry across your cheeks.
-
Sensitive – Your skin has irritated and itchy patches and can be either oily or dry. It can also be reddened or blotchy and have frequent breakouts.
Once you have discovered your skin type, choose products that have been formulated for your skin.
The four steps to a daily skin care routine are: - cleansing, toning, moisturizing and protecting.
Cleansing
Any type of mild beauty soap is fine for removing dirt and grease, but if you wear foundation make-up then you will need to use a facial cleansing agent.
These come in creams, lotions, water-based emulsions or gel form, and they are formulated for individual skin types. Choosing the correct one for your skin type is important. If you suffer from frequent break-outs this could be caused by blocked pores, one excellent method of unblocking pores is to exfoliate once a week, if this doesn’t cure the problem try using a medicated soap or lotion as well.
When applying anything to your face use gentle upward strokes, this avoids stretching your skin and causing wrinkles. Rinse with cold water to close the pores.
For your body, cleanse your skin in the bath or shower using a product specially formulated for the body and your skin type. Splashing with cold water afterwards will close the pores and give your skin a beautiful smooth appearance.
Toning
Using a toner will remove any greasiness left from your make-up or cleansing product, close the pores, stimulate circulation and give your skin a porcelain-like quality.
Again choose one that is formulated for your skin type and apply it with a cotton wool ball using gentle upward strokes.
You will only need to use a toner on your body if you have very oily skin and suffer from breakouts on areas of your body. If this is the cast choose a toner specially formulated for use on the body.
Moisturizing
All skin types need moisturizing every day, even oily skin. Take care to choose a product for your skin type as well as whether it's for your face or body.
Alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) are fruit and milk based acids and they help to remove the dull surface layer of skin, which will expose the fresh new skin below. AHAs can help to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Moisturizers containing AHAs may not be suitable if you have sensitive skin.
If you do have sensitive skin, look out for hypo-allergenic products that do not contain perfumes or dyes.
Always apply a moisturizer using gentle upward strokes. For your body pay special attention to elbows, knees, chest, stomach, calves, thighs and forearms.
The right way to apply moisturizer
Using gentle upward, circular movements, lightly massage the moisturizer into your face. Do not pull or tug your skin.
If you have oily skin, don’t massage it too much, massaging the facial skin stimulates the oil glands to produce more sebum, which will make your skin even oilier.
Pay special attention to the delicate skin under your eyes. This skin is easily damaged so use the forth finger, which is the weakest, and pat the moisturizer gently until the skin absorbs it. Start at the outer corner and work inwards. Do not put eye cream on your upper lids just before going to bed; the skin will be puffy when you wake up in the morning.
Apply your moisturizer twice a day, before you put on your make-up and after you remove it.
