What is Botox?
By Sarah Freeland
Botox is a trade name for botulinum toxin A, derived from a bacterium Clostridium
botulinum.
By its basic nature, Botox is related to botulism, which is a form of food poisoning that occurs when someone ingests something containing a neurotoxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium
botulinum.
But Botox owes much of its contemporary fame to the fact that when injected into the skin in measured doses it helps in removing wrinkles.
In its avatar as a cosmetic Botox is a purified protein derived from Clostridium botulinum bacterium. It is a non-surgical, physician-administered treatment that can temporarily reduce moderate to severe frown lines between the brows in people 18 to 65 years of age.
A small amount of Botox injected into a muscle will block nerve signals that instruct your muscles to contract. In doing that Botox temporarily weakens or paralyzes the facial muscles and smoothes or eliminates wrinkles in the skin for a period of a few months.
During the process of treatment very minute doses of Botox cosmetic are administered via tiny injections directly into the muscles that cause those stubborn wrinkle lines. In usual cases the Botox treatment lasts for about 10 minutes, and no recovery time is needed. Within a matter of two to three days, the patients may see an improvement that can last up to 4 months. Though results are known to vary from person to person depending on their medical history and lifestyle.
Many other possible health benefits of Botox are currently under investigation. Mild amounts of Botox can also help cure ailments such as blepharospasm (uncontrolled blinking) and strabismus (lazy eye). According to a new study, Botox injections into the prostate ease symptoms and improve quality of life for men with enlarged prostate. Botox has also been found effective in treating migraine patients.

Strivectin has long been marketed as 'Better Than Botox' and its main ingredient which causes wrinkle reduction is
Matrixyl.
Matrixyl is a signal peptide that works by fooling the body into thinking that its collagen is damaged and this signal immediately triggers a reaction for collagen repair. This is the same theory behind most of the non-ablative laser treatments.
Once collagen is damaged it signals to the fibroblasts to lay down more collagen which fills in wrinkles.
Matrixyl, also known as Palmitoyl Pentapeptide-3, can also be found in cheaper skin care products such as
Oil of Olay's Regenerist range.
